Turning to Prayer is truly a testimony of the many obstacles teens face growing up. Growing up as a Christian allowed me to see things on a two different levels. I saw the right and the wrong. With the wrong, I was aware of the consequences. I almost prepared for them. With the right choice I felt a sense of relief because I knew God and my parents would be proud, but I felt alienated from peers who didn’t under stand the Word of God. Our teens deal with so many issues such as teen pregnancies, promiscuity and acceptance, which all play huge roles in their development. This book also deals with teen sexuality, abstinence and relationship abuse. These are just some of the many major issues that our teens face today. The poetry that follows each chapter is shared from emotions that were once part of my teenage years. I’ve dealt with a lot of these issues and they consumed most of my life. Becoming a teenage single mother and not knowing my next move was a difficult time of my life. The lack of support from family and the baby’s father pushed me close to the edge. But with God’s love I was able to overcome the fear of failing. Over the years I have come to realize that my situations were lessons that I had to pass on.As parents we try to hide what we went through as teens. This doesn’t help our children. They need to know how we handled those difficult times. They need to know why we made the choices we made and that we too were held accountable for those choices. They already see the wrong in our lives. Don’t you ever think that they are smart enough to know why they don’t share your last name? Or the man that is living with them is not your husband or their father? Don’t you think they know that you are hiding bruises? How then are they supposed to grow and be strong and not settle if we don’t teach them? I wanted to create a forum where teens and their parents could discuss serious issues and remain focused on prayer and support. I wanted to open the door to revealing, feeling and healing. These are the three areas we have a hard time dealing with, when it comes to our pain. |
